Pruning

Our goal is to provide your tree / plant with the proper method of pruning to achieve your goals while maintaining its health, longevity and safety. These are all vital factors in every good quality tree care program. At Signature Tree Care we focus on the specific needs of each individual tree.

Many variables are taken into account when providing a pruning program including but not limited to: tree/plant species, climatic history, soil conditions, growing space, root system, pruning history, irrigation and fertilizer practices.

A qualified ISA Certified Arborist will evaluate your trees/plants and provide you with detailed feedback regarding pruning. The improved development of your trees into a sustainable and more aesthetically pleasing part of your landscape is one of the main goals. Rather than reacting to symptoms, we offer a pro-active and more economical approach in caring for your landscape.

Improper pruning ("tree trimming") is detrimental in that it can create a hazard. This causes damage that will remain with a tree for its entire life or even shorten a tree's lifespan. Improper pruning can be a significant health stress for a tree. At Signature Tree Care we follow ANSI and ISA (International Society of Arboriculture) standards along with Collier and Lee County codes for pruning.

Young Tree Pruning
Proper pruning is essential in developing a tree with a strong structure and desirable form. This pruning ensures performance, safety and minimizes future maintenance costs. Unfortunately, proper training is not a standard practice in nurseries. Many homeowners wait until the tree is overgrown before performing any pruning. Consequently, trees can develop structural defects which become a liability that ultimately lead to partial failure, loss of tree, property damage, or cause personal injury.

Benefits of Young Tree Pruning
Trees that receive appropriate pruning while they are young will require minimal corrective pruning when they mature.
Reduces structural defects such as co-dominant stems, multiple trunks, weak attachments & dense canopies.
Lowers hazard potential allowing trees to live longer and suffer less damage during a wind event.

Mature Tree Pruning
Mature trees require a knowledgeable certified arborist that recognizes specific needs as they differ from younger, more vigorous trees. Pruning should only be completed with an understanding of how the tree will respond to each pruning cut. Making large cuts on an older tree could prove to be damaging as they have less ability to compartmentalize and seal exposed wood which can lead to rot. No branch should be removed without a reason. Also, a more conservative approach should be taken when removing volumes of foliage. Mature trees cannot handle improper pruning as they will become easily stressed.
Proper pruning can maintain good tree health & structure while enhancing the aesthetic and economic value.
In Southwest Florida most routine pruning to remove weak, diseased, or dead limbs with the proper percentage of foliage removed (with respect to species) can be accomplished at any time during the year with little effect on the tree.
