Root Barrier Systems

Throughout urban America cracked driveways, buckled sidewalks and roadways, damaged home foundations, utilities and patios are the result of conflict between structures and tree roots.

As the trees mature in our communities, the way in which the urban landscape is managed will face increasing challenges. Diligence on the part of the community association boards and property managers will determine the sustainability and the cost effectiveness in the management of the landscape and its surrounding structures.

A root barrier is a mechanical barrier that redirects root growth away from existing structures (ie. pavers, buildings) eliminating the surface rooting that damages expensive structures which then creates safety hazards. A root barrier may not always be the single most effective solution, and in some cases it is one component of an effective solution.

Please note: The cutting of supporting roots to relieve upward pressure on concrete often destabilizes a tree creating a hazard. These situations should be carefully evaluated by a certified arborist to determine the soundness of this practice.

When Selecting a Root Barrier System:

  • We have the capabilities to assess the tree system as a whole.
  • Many variables must be taken into consideration such as: size and health of the root system and canopy of the tree, balance, weight, structure, species, and growth characteristics.
  • The site expectations and goals along with possible targets must all be considered when implementing a root barrier system.
  • Structures, utilities, types of traffic, volume, frequency, and need of access are also taken into consideration when installing root barriers.
  • Understanding cultural practices are important when using root barriers such as past and future maintenance practices (i.e. irrigation, pruning, etc.).
  • The surrounding environment such as tree density (amount of trees in a given space) and buildings are only some of the factors taken into account when managing trees and roots in relation to adjacent structures.
