Throughout urban America cracked driveways, buckled sidewalks and roadways, damaged home foundations, utilities and patios are the result of conflict between structures and tree roots.
As the trees mature in our communities, the way in which the urban landscape is managed will face increasing challenges. Diligence on the part of the community association boards and property managers will determine the sustainability and the cost effectiveness in the management of the landscape and its surrounding structures.
A root barrier is a mechanical barrier that redirects root growth away from existing structures (ie. pavers, buildings) eliminating the surface rooting that damages expensive structures which then creates safety hazards.
A root barrier may not always be the single most effective solution, and in some cases it is one component of an effective solution.
Please note: The cutting of supporting roots to relieve upward pressure on concrete often destabilizes a tree creating a hazard. These situations should be carefully evaluated by a certified arborist to determine the soundness of this practice.
